We Are Family
April 2025
The spread of grape varieties across the globe is linked to human migrations and trade routes, with some varieties tracing back to ancient origins in the Levant and Caucasus, approximately 11,000 years ago.
The study of wine grape lineage, or grapevine phylogeography, involves tracing the genetic relationships and evolutionary history of different wine grape varieties. This field uses tools like DNA sequencing and genetic analysis to understand how different grape varieties are related to each other, where they originated, and how they spread across the globe.
Ampelography is the field of botany concerned with the identification and classification of grapevines, Vitis. Traditionally this has been done by comparing the shape and color of the vine leaves and grape berries; more recently the study of vines has been revolutionized by DNA fingerprinting.
With new techniques like DNA fingerprinting and microsatellite analysis we are now closer to identifying the parentage of new and different grape varieties, revealing how they are related to each other. Studies of genetic diversity in grapes help understand how grape varieties adapt to different climates and soil types. Understanding grape lineage can inform winemaking practices, breeding programs, and the selection of grape varieties best suited for specific wine regions.
